Description

Our online Level 5 Diploma in Education course leads to Fully Qualified Teacher Status or QTLS with the Society for Education and Training. This qualifies teachers or trainers to teach across a wide range of FE, HE institutions, Colleges, Training Providers etc in the UK and abroad. You are usually expected to complete the course within 9 months from enrolment. We however give you an additional 3 months if you fail to complete during the normal duration which stretches the time period to a maximum 12 months.

What will I learn?

There are seven units covered in this course. These are:

Unit 1 - Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training

Unit 2 - Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training.

Unit 3 - Theories, principles and models in education and training

Unit 4 - Wider professional practice in education and training

Unit 5 - Teaching in a Specialist Area

Unit 6 - Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area

Unit 7 - Inclusive Practice

The course is assessed via a combination of written assignments and practical portfolio evidence from your current teaching role. The theoretical assignments require you to analyse theories of teaching and learning, linking them to your own teaching practice and evaluating your own practice. Our electronic presentations with video links and accompanying sources will guide you through each unit step by step.

The practical element requires you to compile an e-portfolio of your current teaching practice. This includes logging 100 hours of teaching and 8 lesson observations. The observations need to be observed by a qualified teacher.

Who is this course for?

The course is for anyone currently teaching that is looking to achieve teacher status and become a qualified teacher. This pathway and suite of qualifications are designed to be flexible, which might mean you are not necessarily teaching in the traditional classroom or school environment. It can also be studied around your other work and life commitments, which is often much more difficult in many other traditional teacher training programmes.

The teaching hours you log as part of your practical evidence can come from the primary, secondary or post 16 sector environments. They can also be in a paid or voluntary role.

Requirements

For the purposes of your practicum, you must be in service, be delivering sessions voluntarily in order for observations to take place.

The DET will accept applicants aged 19 or above.

You will be required to carry out intensive online research

You must have access to 100 teaching hours for your log.

Applicants need to demonstrate the potential to study at minimum academic Level 5 – the same level of study as the second year of a degree course

Career path

  • Fast track entry onto the final year of an Education Degree (saving you years off a degree program)
  • Become a qualified teacher
  • Direct route to become eligible to undertake a QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills).
  • Possibility to work as a teacher abroad

FAQs

Study method describes the format in which the course will be delivered. At Reed Courses, courses are delivered in a number of ways, including online courses, where the course content can be accessed online remotely, and classroom courses, where courses are delivered in person at a classroom venue.

CPD stands for Continuing Professional Development. If you work in certain professions or for certain companies, your employer may require you to complete a number of CPD hours or points, per year. You can find a range of CPD courses on Reed Courses, many of which can be completed online.

A regulated qualification is delivered by a learning institution which is regulated by a government body. In England, the government body which regulates courses is Ofqual. Ofqual regulated qualifications sit on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF), which can help students understand how different qualifications in different fields compare to each other. The framework also helps students to understand what qualifications they need to progress towards a higher learning goal, such as a university degree or equivalent higher education award.

An endorsed course is a skills based course which has been checked over and approved by an independent awarding body. Endorsed courses are not regulated so do not result in a qualification - however, the student can usually purchase a certificate showing the awarding body's logo if they wish. Certain awarding bodies - such as Quality Licence Scheme and TQUK - have developed endorsement schemes as a way to help students select the best skills based courses for them.
